Koh Samui Land Interest On The Rise

Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very happy new year and all the best for 2013.

As the title of the blog suggests, there seems to be a lot of interest in Koh Samui land at the moment. A lot of wealthy locals are looking to snap up large parcels of land, for their families in the future, as well as hotel groups looking at prime options to bring their brands to the island.

A few sales over the last few months include these three sites.

49 rai Laem Set Beach - This parcel of land, with over 450 metres of beach frontage would have made a beautiful resort, but has been sold to a private local buyer for his family.

Spa Samui Resort - Now under contract

Angthong Villa - purchased by an high level Minister.

There are a few other deals that are under negotiation that will be released in the near future.

My thoughts on the recent increase could be a combination of a few things;

Firstly, airlift to Samui will be increased later this year with the opening of a new airport on Koh Phangan by Kan Air of Chiang Mai. This will free up a number of seats of travelers that would have flown into Samui, before jumping on the ferry to the neighbouring island.

Secondly, With most of the larger brands already having set up shop in the other major locations of Phuket, Bangkok and Pattaya, Samui is the next logical option for expansion within the country.

Thirdly, the prices on Samui have stabled out, after rising too high in recent years they have come down to a reasonable level. That, with the increasing entry costs into the other major tourist destinations of Thailand, makes Samui the easiest place to make you business model work.

Whats new for 2013?

There are currently 3 new branded resorts under construction, due to open over the next 18 months, introducing a further 371 rooms. Also, a number of other brand developers closely looking at options on the island, which can't be discussed yet.

Movenpick Samui - Maenam Beach - 81 rooms
Ozo by Onyx - Chaweng Beach - 210 rooms (opening 2014)
Vana Belle - Chaweng Beach - 80 rooms

With Koh Samui being a small island, quality land parcels are a finite resource. There are still a handful of resort suitable properties available, but at this rate, who knows how long for. If you are considering expanding to Koh Samui, now is the time to start looking.

I am based here full time now and will be happy to show you around if you come to check out the island.

Hope to see you all soon
